President Mary McAleese becomes Sole Patron of The Irish Chronic Pain Association
The Irish Chronic Pain Association is the principal support group in Ireland for the 400,000 people of all ages suffering with chronic pain. This figure emerged following a Pain in Europe survey, carried out in 2003 by the NFO World Group. The survey represented the largest and most in-depth chronic pain survey ever conducted in Europe.
The ICPA is a registered charity, run by a committee of volunteers and is in existence for the past twelve years. Monthly support meetings are held in Dublin and a quarterly Newsletter is sent out to members. The ICPA is also actively involved in coordinating support for people in pain on a European wide basis, through our involvement with the European Pain Network, EPN. The Irish Chronic Pain Association is a member of the Neurological Alliance of Ireland.
Chronic pain severely impacts on all aspects of an individuals life. People with chronic pain are not seeking sympathy; they do, however, need support, reassurance and practical help.
"The President's ability, to support,, empathise and reach out to people in difficulty will be of tremendous benefit to all of those suffering from chronic pain and we are delighted that the President has agreed to become sole Patron of the Association," said Frances Whelan, Chair ICPA and Vice- President of the European Pain Network.
